Kubbernuss families have been documented as living in and around Kuesserow, Levin and Malchin Mecklenburg as early as 1721 and we're confident this name existed in the area for several hundred years before that. We believe the name is a derivative of the surname Cobernuss/Kobernuss found around Malchin as early as 1425, but we have no firm proof of this. The most common and preferred spelling is Kubbernuss, but we've seen other variations such as Cubbernuss, Kupperness, Kubernes and Kuberness. Although the following related families all departed for the US from Levin Parish, Mecklenburg, there is indication that they and their ancestors lived in Thuerkow parish, and Dargun
parishes prior to settling in Levin parish.

Kubbernuss Family Villages

We don't know much about the early ancestors of the Kubbernuss family of Berrien County, Michigan. The earliest record we've found is the marriage of Christian Christoph Kubbernuss and SOPHIA Elisabeth Magdalena (Helene) Burmeister in Schorrentin parish on 25 October 1831. We believe Christian may have been born in Lehnenhof, Dargun parish, and Schorrentin in Schorrentin parish was probably Sophia's home village. Although we have not found Christian and Sophia's birth records, we did find the christening records of their five children in Lehnenhof.
Three of these children eventually immigrated in 1867, 1868, and 1875. Christian and Sophia are included in the 1875 immigration where they are listed on the passenger list with their son and his family.

KUBBERNUSS Family Researchers. There is much more to be done with this family, If you want to help out let us know. It's not hard or necessary to read German. WE KNOW THE WAY AND CAN HELP.

Immigrant Ship # 11. Ship "Eugenie" Hamburg-New York xx.10.1867 – 02.11. 1867

        Kubermuss (Kubbernuss), Joh. F. (b. 1835) Farmer & Wilhelmina Sodemann (b. 1843) Fiancé?

Notes: This is probably Johann (John/Christoph?) Friederich and Wilhelmina Sodemann. No children. This is the first of three immigrations of this closely related family to Berrien County Michigan. See immigrants [13] and [27]. This family settled in Michigan in 1867and had three children in 1868, 1869 and 1871. These children all died in February 1873 of "Searlatina" (Scarlet Fever?). Nine more children were born between 1872 and 1882 in Three Oaks. The "John" Kubbernuss family is recorded in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 Michigan Census. Johan Kubbernuss died in 1905 and Wilhelmina is recorded in the 1910 Census as living alone. The 1894 marriage of daughter Ann Kubbernuss to William Jones indicates mother of bride is "Sophia Kramer" but this may actually William Jones's mother or maybe another Ann Kubbernuss. We need to re-look at the record. Since both parents were still alive in 1894 does this mean John Kubbernuss remarried? This needs to be clarified.

Immigrant Ship #13. Ship "Hammonia" Hamburg--New York 12.08.1868 - 25.08.1868

        Kubbernuss, Friederich. (b. 1841) & Louise Yahn (b. 1842)

         -Wilhelmina (b. 1865)
           -Auguste (Dau b. 1867)

Note: This is the second of three immigrations of this family to Three Oaks, Berrien County Michigan. See Immigrant families [11] and [27].  Passenger record says family departed from "Leoner. Werder". No "Leoner." Actually "Levin Werder" near village of Levin. Some members of this family used the variation "Kupperness".

Birth records indicate Louise’s parents were Johann Joachim Yahn and Sophia Dorothea Frederica Timm of Remplin. Need to order film for Remplin, Hohen Mistorf parish. This is LDS 69208-10

Marriage record of Friederich and Louise found in Levin parish records. Marriage record says Louise was born in Remplin (Hohen Mistorf Parish), and Frdr. was born in Lehnenhof, (Dargun Parish). No record of daughter Wilhelmina's birth in Levin; look again since she was born after Levin marriage and found Auguste‘s birth in Levin records.

A Fred and Louise Kubbernuss and children Wilhelmina and Auguste show up in the 1870 Michigan census in Berrien County. Also listed on the 1870 Michigan Census is a John and Mina Kubbernuss almost certainly brother to Friederich who immigrated to Three Oaks, MI in 1867.

A Louise Kuppernuss (b. 1843) shows up in 1910 and 1920 St. Joseph Michigan Census as Mother-in-Law of Gustov Knaak husband of daughter Auguste.

Immigrant Ship #27. Ship "Wieland" Hamburg?-New York XX.06.1875 - 21.07.1875

        a. Kubbermuss, (Kubbernuss),  Christian (b. Abt. 1817) Farmer & Sophie (b. Abt. 1817) Wife
        b. Joachim (b. Abt. 1845) Sailor & Louise/Luise (b. Abt. 1848) Wife
                        Wilhelmina (b. Abt 1873) Child
                        Anna (b. Abt 1875) Child

Note: This is the third of three immigrations of this family to Three Oaks, Berrien County Michigan. See immigrants [11] and [13]. Family probably departed from Levin Werder. This is probably CHRISTIAN Gottfried Christoph Kubbernuss (b. Abt 1814 in Lehnenhof) and SOPHIA Elisabeth Magdalena (Helene) Burmeister (b. Abt 1814 in Schorrentin Parish). Christian Probably born Lehnenhof, Dargun parish and married in Schorrentin Parish. Look for Sophia’s birth in Schorrentin. Christian and Sophie's two sons Friederich and Johann had already immigrated to Three Oaks in 1867 and 1868. A daughter, Frederica Johanna Christiana Kubbernuss married Johann Christian Friederich Teich in 1860 in Levin. They and their five children may have stayed in Levin but have not verified this. Need to review passenger records to see if any Teich families immigrated to Michigan.

Traveling with Christian and Sophie were their son, Ludwig JOACHIM Friederich Wilhelm Kubbernuss, (b. 17.August.1843) [look for birth in Lehnenhof.] and wife Luise Pauline Fredericka Koch (b. 2.March.1847 in Malchin). They traveled with two children Wilhelmina Friederike Dorothea (b. 21.September.1872 in Levin), and Anna Dorothea Christiana (b. 12.July.1874 in Levin.). Need to check Michigan marriage records between 1890 and 1900 for the marriages of Wilhelmina and Anna.
