Johann Kubbernuss married Elisabeth Dorthea Wegner on October 19, 1798 in Levin, Mecklenburg. His grandson Johann FREDERICH Theodor Kubbernuss was born 5 Nov 1848 in Levin. He married Johanne Maria Luise Wilhelmina (MINNIE) Hamp Feb 7, 1873 in the parish of Levin.  There is no record of Wilhelmina's birth in the Levin church book so she probably was born in another parish nearby. They were the parents of least 9 children. Their first child, born in 1872 in Levin apparently was stillborn.

Friederich and Wilhelmina came to the US aboard the vessel  Trave  that sailed from Bremen Germany and arrived in New York on 21 September 1888. Traveling with them were seven children. Their last child Anna was born in Peckatonica Illinois a couple of years after the family arrived in the US. The family lived in Illinois and South Dakota.

The birth records of Bertha, Augusta, Wilhelmina and Frieda were recorded in the Levin church book between 1873 and 1880; however, we were unable to find the births of Carl, Wilhelm and Frederick, so it is likely the family did not depart directly from Levin but lived in another village from about 1880 to 1888.

We attempted to determine if Friederich is related to any other Kubbernuss family in the US or Canada. So far, we have found no direct relationship. Although at least one other family we know of immigrated from Levin, we have no evidence these two families are related.

Summary:

The church books for Levin parish contain the names of many people related to Johann Kubbernuss. The Levin parish film numbers 0069305 and 1348513 cover births, deaths and marriages for the period 1682-1882. One film is a hand written transcription of the other and both contain similar data. We recommend ordering 0069305 as it is easier to read.

More research is needed on this family, we welcome verification and correction of the data we've collected. For example, information from family members and public records indicate Friederich Kubbernuss first settled in Illinois and his descendants subsequently homesteaded in Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota. Friederich Kubbernus or his descendants apparently are not mentioned in either the Illinois or Iowa census for 1900, 1910 and 1920.  It is possible we have overlooked them in our search and need to reexamine the census for those states. We have not researched the census records for North and South Dakota so there may be some mention there. We welcome additional data on this family.

This ends the narrative as we know it regarding the Friederich Kubbernuss family and its origins.  The data contained in this narrative is subject to change as we uncover more facts about this family. Additions and corrections are welcome.
