Friederich Kubbernuss came to the US on the John Bertram, sailing from Hamburg Germany arriving in the Port of New York on 26 October 1857.  According to the passenger record, Friederich Kubbernuss was a laborer age 31 heading for Wisconsin. Source: Filby, "Germans to America" Vol 11, pg 401

During our research of church records for Alt-Kalen parish in Germany, we came across the birth of a Johann Joachim FRIEDERICH Kubbernuss born 14 Dec 1826 in the village of Damm. We concludethat the Friederich Kubbernuss who sailed on the Bertram in 1857, fought in the civil war, and was born in Damm Germany are the same person. Source: Alt-Kalen church book p.147, # 35

There is quite a  bit of information on the Kubbernuss families who settled in Wisconsin; but we have not been able to connect them to Frederick Kubbernuss. For example, another Kubbernuss family immigrated to Milwaukee in September 1857 from Kuesserow, a village very close to Damm. This family settled in Outagamie County Wisconsin and was joined by other members of the family in later years.

Ship "John Bertram" Hamburg-Marseilles-New York xx.10.1857 - 26.10.1857
Captain: F. J. Knudsen; ID: 00009112; Class: Steerage; Destination: Wisconsin

          Kubbernuss, F. (b. Abt 1829) Laborer

Note: Source: "Germans to America" Vol 11, pg 401. Looked in Hamburg List, LDS 0470839, found ship, but could not find passenger. Try Indirect List. Filby says destination Wisconsin. Could be heading for Milwaukee. Birthplace unknown - maybe Damm.  . . . Could be brother to[2]Christian Cobernuss listed as passenger on the "Howard" earlier in same year. There is also the possibility this is an ancestor of the Koffarnus family that lived in Wisconsin for many years.

Civil War Service of Frederick Kubbernuss
The National Archives contains a widow’s pension application of Sophia Schocknecht, wife of Frederick Kubbernuss who served in the 37th Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War years of 1864-65. This pension application provides information (33 pages!!), about Frederick Kubbernuss and his family who owned a farm in West Granville Township (now part of Milwaukee). The records give Frederich’s birth date as 14 Dec 1826 in Germany. Source: Civil War Widow Pension Application 449180

Frederick Kubbernuss is the only immigrant we know of that served with the Union Army. Documents in the National Archives indicate he was drafted as a private into Company C, 37th Wisconsin infantry on Sept 21, 1864 and discharged June 4, 1865. According to the Department of the Interior records, he is listed as "Fritz Kulbernes", on the regimental roles.

A history of the 37th Infantry can be found on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System by the National Park Service. A list of the 2000 members of the 37th Infantry is available at this link; Frederick Kubbernuss is listed as number 906 on the regimental roles.

According to Department of Interior records Frederick probably was with the unit during some of the bloodiest fighting in the Civil War and participated in the Appomattox Campaign [March-April 1865] and the surrender of Lee to Grant at the Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.

Here is a short history of the  Wisconsin 37th Regiment Infantry.

After the Civil War Frederick apparently returned to Granville Township, Wisconsin near Milwaukee. The information we have indicates Frederick and Sophia had at least four children: Fred, Albert, John, and Ida. Alfred Kubbernuss 1907-1997 lived in Brookfield, Waukesha, WI very near where Frederick Kubbernuss had a farm. It is likely that he is descended from Frederick and Sophia but we have not determined the exact link.
