Kobernuss & Kubbernuss Immigration

We have traced about thirty German families from Mecklenburg and West Pomerania that immigrated to the U.S. between 1853 and 1888. They settled mainly in Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee. Several of these families later homesteaded in various areas of the Midwest US and Canada. If you'd like know more about these early families, check our Family Links  page.

We also have lots of information on the Ships  they traveled on. All of the immigrants we've researched disembarked at Castle Garden on the tip of Manhattan. A very interesting narrative on this immigrant portal is provided by the National Park Service and the Ships Link.

This page provides a chronology of the immigration of the Kobernus and Kobernus families we know about.  If you are aware of any immigrants that traveled under other names or those that are not included please let us know.

Check the following link if you want to know more about the ships our ancestors sailed on or the history of the transition from sail to steam. The 1848 immigration diary of Michael Friedrich Radke, is also worth a visit. The diary of The Immigration Story of Ernst Bohning, 1843 is also very interesting.

These are the immigrant families we are currently researching.

Captain: W. F. Wolter, ID: 00009052; Class: Cabin; Destination: Milwaukee (recheck NY arrival)

Cabernuss (Kubbernuss), Christian. (b. Abt 1798) &
Catharina (b. Abt 1799)
                Christoph. (b. Abt 1826) Son
                Maria (b. Abt 1834) Daughter

LDS 470839- Traveling with Helene Meyer. Not sure of relation.

Note: Passenger list says family departed from Treptow, in Pomerania. Born in Kuesserow. Destination Milwaukee. Family settled in Outagamie County Wisconsin.

This is Joachiem CHRISTIAN Kubbernuss, (b. 25 Apr 1798) in Kuesserow and CATHARINA Dorothea Schumacher b: 13.May.1798 in Warsow. The IGI gives a death date for Christian of Feb 1839. This is unlikely as it appears he immigrated to the US on the Howard in 1857.

This couple had 5 Children, the child Christoph traveling with them is probably Joachiem CHRISTOPH Theodore (b: 26.January 1826). Only mention of Christoph is 1900 Wisconsin Census that lists a Christ. "Kuppernuss, b. Jan 1826 in Germany, living wife Fredericka Kupernuss and son William and three grandchildren.

The other child Marie traveling with her parents is probably twin Dorothea Marie Friederike (b. 28 May 1834). She married Friederich Adolph Theodosius Dietrich (William?) Struck in Schorrentin parish in 1855. She had one child in Kuesserow in 1856 that died in 1857 in Kuesserow. The IGI indicates she had another child probably by Struck in 1858 in New London, WI so we assume her husband was either on the same voyage or had traveled on a previous voyage.

According to data provided by a family member, twin Marie Sophia Johanne married Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Eggers in 14.January.1852 in New London, Waupaca/Outagamie, WI. This is five years before her parents immigrated. This could be incorrect because a 1852 marriage would make her only 17 years old and the marriage would have occurred 5 years before the parents immigrated. It's more likely that they married in Germany and she immigrated to Wisconsin under her husband's name. Need to search for marriage in both Wisconsin and Kuesserow/Schorrentin parishes.

Another female child was Elisabeth Sophie Caroline Kubbernuss (b. 17.February.1828). Family data indicates she was married in New London Wisconsin to William George Rase about 1858. There is no record of how she immigrated to the US. Since she was 29 when her parents immigrated it's likely she married in Germany and immigrated to the US some time before.

Youngest child Christine Johanne Sophie Marie was born 29.November.1837 in Kuesserow. There is no record of her immigration or marriage but she would have been 20 at the time of her parent's immigration so it's also likely she married Ernest L Kaepernick in Germany and immigrated with him.

Also listed as traveling with the Kubbernuss family on the Howard voyage was Helene Meyer age 26. No indication of relationship to the Kubbernuss family.

Research notes: Look in Wisconsin census for Struck, Eggars and Kaepernick family. Also look for same family immigrations in Filby. Found in film D470839

5. Ship "John Bertram" Hamburg-Marseilles-New York xx.10.1857 - 26.10.1857
Captain: F. J. Knudsen; ID: 00009112; Class: Steerage; Destination: Wisconsin

        Kubbernuss, J. (b. Abt 1826) Laborer

Note: Birthplace Damm. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 11, pg 401. LDS 0470839.  Filby says destination Wisconsin. Could be heading for Milwaukee. This is probably Frederick Kubbernuss of Milwaukee born 1826 in Damm, Mecklenburg. Served in the Civil War from 1864 to 1865 as part of the 37 Wisconsin Infantry. Widow pension application on file with the National Archives indicates Friederich Kubbernuss lived in Granville now part of Milwaukee. Source: Civil War Widow Pension Application 449180. Also birth date of Friederich Kubbernuss of Milwaukee (14 Dec 1826) matches the date of birth of a Johann Joachim Friederich Kubbernuss born in Damm, Alt-Kalen parish Germany. Source: Alt-Kalen church book p.147, # 35. Could be brother to [2] Christian Cobernuss listed as passenger on the "Howard" earlier in same year. There is also the possibility this is an ancestor of the Koffarnus family that lived in Wisconsin for many years. Found in D470839 p. 842.

6. Ship "Howard" Hamburg-Marseilles-New Orleans 17.01.1857 - 22.02.1858
Captain: W. T. Wolter; ID:00009175; Class: Steerage Destination: Michigan

Cobernuuss (Cobernuss), Johann. (b. Abt 1827) Farmer

Note: Note: Birthplace unknown. Departed from "Kussow"?) probably a village near Guestrow), Recheck this entire entry.  Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, ZIP 18276 .(There is also a "Kuesserow" near Altkalen & Damm.  LDS 0472839. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 12, pg 104-5. No known descendants. Found in
D470840

7. Ship "Unknown" Unknown Port - New York Abt 1861

Koffarnus, (Kubbernuss?) Friederich, (b. Abt 1843), Single Male

Note: The "Koffarnus" family has been in the US probably since about 1861. The 1880 and 1900 US Census indicates this family in first settled in Calumet, Chilton County, Wisconsin. Friederich "Fred" married after he arrived in the US and had at least twelve children. Descendants lived in Winnebago, Clark and Martin counties before spreading throughout the US. Nothing more is known of the origin in Germany of this family but it is possible that Fred Koffarnus is actually one of the people already documented in this immigration list. Need to check 1870 Census to see if he is documented.

8. Ship "Germania" Hamburg--New York 16.10.1863 - 02.11.1863
Captain: H. Ehlers; ID: 00010179; Class: Steerage; Destination: USA

Catharina Sophie Rugenstein (b. Kubbernuss 4 Oct 1813 in Kuesserow)
                Minna    (b. Abt 1833)
                Wilhelm (b. Abt 1847)
                Ernst      (b. Abt 1841)
                Louise   (b. Abt 1842)
                Johann Bluhm  (b. Abt. 1838)
                     Wilhelm Bluhm (b. Abt. 1861)

Note: Family departed from Kuesserow. According to a descendant, Catharina Kubbernuss-Rugenstein was a widow of Heinrich Theodore Friedrich Dietrich Rugenstein with five grown children. Four of them traveled with her on the "Germania"- The eldest son, Joachim Friedrich Martin Rugenstein is not listed on the manifest. His obituary states that he immigrated to the US in 1864, staying for the first six months in New York. The family settled in Saginaw, Michigan. If you want to know more about this family, let us know and we'll put you in touch with family members who have researched this line.
9. Ship "Saxonia" Hamburg-Marseilles-New York 18.11.1863 - 07.12.1863
Capt. N. Trautmann; ID: 00010191; Class: Steerage

a. Kobermuss (Kobernuss), Christian (b. Abt 1818) Farmer
& Maria (b. Abt 1824) Wife
                  Wilhelmina (b. Abt 1841) Daughter
                  Maria (b. Abt 1844) Daughter

Note: Birthplace unknown Family departed from Bolz, Sternburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. No subsequent record of wife Maria who probably died after arrival and may be buried in Selma Cemetery in Tonawanda NY. Daughters Wilhelmina and Maria are mentioned in an 1890 Erie County will of Christian Cobernus Sr. (1814-1890) who died in North Tonawanda New York. This Christian Cobernus is probably buried in City Cemetery or possibly adjacent Salem Cemetery. On the same voyage was a Christian Kobernuss (b. 1829 (1839?) who may be his son. Erie county records reflect a Christian Cobernuss applied for naturalization in Erie County New York in June 1873. Probably the father of Christian Cobernus (1839-1911) on same voyage who lived on Grand Island New York for 46 years and is buried in Nice Cemetery, Grand Island.  Descendants of Christian Kobernus have been identified in Tonawanda New York. Court records and Obits for the family of Christian Cobernus spell his name variously as "Kobernmuz", "Kobernauz" and "Kobarnus". Source: "Germans to America" Vol 15, pg 145. LDS 0472894.

       b. Kobermuss (Kobernuss) Christian (b. Abt 1829? (or Feb 1839)) Farmer.

Note: Note: Birthplace unknown. Departed from Bolz. Probably son of Christian Kobernuss above. Since he was of age probably listed separate from female siblings on the Saxonia manifest noted above. Also departed from Bolz A Christian Cobernus, b. 1839, is listed in the 1900 Grand Island Census with an immigration date of 1863. Probably Christian Cobernus (1839-1911) who lived on Grand Island New York for 46 years and is buried in Nice Cemetery, Grand Island. Probably the son of Christian Kobernuss (b.1818) noted on the same voyage and who lived in Tonawanda for many years. 1900 Census says Christian, father of Theodore Cobernus immigrated 1863 and was born in 1839; right immigration year, but the Hamburg list could have listed the wrong age. Need to check NY port records and German cemetery records to verify. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 15, pg 145. LDS 0472894. Descendants go by the name COBERNUS.

10. Ship "Allemania" Hamburg-New York 12.10.1867 - 28.10.1867

Kobernuss, Marie (b. Abt 1841) Single woman

Note: Birthplace unknown. Departed from Alt Kalden (Modern name Altkalen). Single woman, no known descendants. Unusual for a single woman age 26 to travel alone unless her family or husband had already immigrated? No subsequent record of this person, but immigrants from towns close by such as Damm & Kuesserow/Kussow have been identified on other voyages. Since people often returned to Germany for various reasons this could be a person who already immigrated. Could be related to immigrants from Kuesserow (1868), Damm (1868), Levitzow (1871) and Matgendorf (1882). Source: "Germans to America" Vol 20, pg 150. LDS 0472898. No known descendants.
11. Ship "Eugenie "Hamburg-New York 14.09.1867 – 02.11. 1867
Capt. Capt Cohabley; ID: Unknown: Class: Unknown

Kubermuss (Kubbernuss), J. F. (b. Abt 1835) Farmer
 & Wilhelmine (b. 1843) Wife

Notes: Family departed from Levin Werder. This is probably Johann (John/Christoph?) Friederich and Wilhelmina Sodemann. This is the first of three immigrations of this family to Three Oaks, Barrien County Michigan. See immigrants [10] and [22]. May be related to Johann Kobernus of same village [11] The family settled in Michigan in 1867and had three children in 1868, 1869 and 1871. These children all died in February 1873 of "Searlatina" (Scarlet Fever?). Five more children were born between 1873 and 1882 in Three Oaks. The family is recorded in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 Michigan Census. Johann Kubbernuss died in 1905 and Wilhelmine is recorded in the 1910 Census as living alone. The 1894 marriage of Ann Kubbernuss to William Jones indicates mother of bride is Sophia Kramer. Since Wilhelmine was still alive does this mean John Kubbernuss remarried? This needs to be clarified.  LDS 472898 Pg. 946

12. Ship "Allemania" Hamburg-New York 03.06.1868 - 17.06.1868

        a. Kubbernuss, Christian  (b. Abt 1828)

Note: Departed from Damm near Kuesserow & Altkalen. There is a Marie Kobernus from the same town on the same voyage. There also is a Christian Kobernuss b. 1821 and family from "Kussow" (Kuesserow?)" on the same voyage. There is a Kuesserow very near Damm and Altkalen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a few miles west of Kussow. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 21, pg 137-42. LDS 0472899. No Known descendants.
        b. Kobernuss, Marie (b. Abt 1812)
Note: Departed from Damm, near Kuesserow and Altkalen. Damm is within one half mile of Altkalen where another Marie Kobernuss (b. 1841) [7] of the "Allemania" voyage in Oct 1867 departed. She is quite a bit older than other immigrants of the time and is probably a wife of an immigrant already in the U.S. or a widow traveling alone. Although 9a and 9b were from the same village, their names are clearly spelled differently. She is about the same age as the Christian Kobermuss (b.1818) [6a] who arrived on the Saxonia in 1863 and could be his wife or sister in law. There is an almost five year time lapse between the "Saxonia" and "Allemania" arrivals. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 21, pg 137-42. LDS 0472899.
        c. Kobernuss, Christian (b. Aug 1810) & Dora (b. Feb 1818) Wife
                   Wilhelm (b. Abt 1852) Son)
                   Friederike (b. Dec 1855 Dau)

Note: Departed from Kussow probably a village near Guestrow), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, ZIP 18276. (There is also a "Kuesserow" near Altkalen & Damm and a Kuesserow in the same general area. A Christopher Cobernuss and wife Dora show up in 1880 Iowa Census record. Probably related to Christian Kubernuss and Marie Kobernuss noted above on the same voyage. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 21, pg 137-42. LDS 0472899. No Known descendants.

Friederike married Heft and settled in Palo Alto Twp, Jasper co. IA. A biography dated 1928 said they had five children; Mary, Annie, Lena, Emma, Edward.

13. Ship "Hammonia” Hamburg--New York 12.08.1868 - 25.08.1868

        Kubbernuss, Friederich. (b. Abt 1841) & Louise (b. Abt 1843)
                Wilhelmine (Dau b. Abt 1865)
                Auguste (Dau b. Abt 1867)

        Yahn, Louise, (b. Abt 1814)

Notes: Passenger record says family departed from "Leoner. Werder". No "Leoner." Actually "Levin Werder" near village of Levin. This is the second of three immigrations of this family to Three Oaks, Barrien County Michigan. See immigrants [8], and [22]. May be related to Johann Kobernus of same village [11]

Louise Yahn also traveling with the Kubbernuss family. Probably related to Louise, but not sure how. Could be mother but birth records indicate Louise’s parents were Johann Joachim Yahn and Sophia Dorothea Frederica Timm of Remplin. Need to order film for Remplin, Hohen Mistdorf  parish.

Marriage record of Friederich and Louise found in Levin parish records. Marriage record says Louise was born in Remplin (Hohen Mistdorf Parish), and Frdr. born in Lehnenhof, (Dargun Parish). No record of daughter Wilhelmina's birth in Levin; look again since she was born after Levin marriage and found Augusta's birth in Levin records.

A Fred and Louise Kubbernuss and children Wilhelmine and Auguste show up in the 1870 Michigan census in Barrien County. Also listed on the 1870 Michigan Census is a John and Mina Kubbernuss almost certainly brother to Friederich who immigrated to Three Oaks, MI in 1867.

A Louise Kuppernuss (b. 1843) shows up in 1910 and 1920 St. Joseph Michigan Census as Mother-in-Law of Gustov Knaak.  Another possible descendent: Lonzo Cubbernuss, 1908-1970, Colon, St. Joseph MI. Source: “Germans to America” Vol 21, pg. 362-66. LDS 0472899.

14. Ship "Holstatia (Dorette??)" Hamburg--New York 14.10.1868 - 27.10.1868

        Kubberuuss, Johann (b. Abt 1828) & "Lina" (Carolina?)  b. Abt 1840) Wife

Note: Departed from Levin, Meck-Vpr. Johann from same parish as Friederich of the Hammonia in 1868 [10] Johann of the Eugenia [8] and Christian of the Wieland [22].  "Lina" is a nickname for Carolina. Possible match in Levin church records is Johann Christian Ludwig Kubbernuss born 1 Jan 1827 and Johanna Carolina Sophia Schroeder born 9 April 1840 married 20.November.1863 in Levin. A "Lena" Kobernuss "widow of John" shows up in the Chicago directory between 1904-1910. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 22, pg 65-67. LDS 0472899. P. 1046. No subsequent record of this family and no known children.
15. Ship "Borussia" Hamburg--New York 31.10.1868 - 27.11.1868
Capt. Franzen; Class: Third Class

Coberuefs (Cobernuss), Johann. (b. Abt 1844) Carpenter

23. Ship "Unknown" Unknown Port - New York Abt 1872

        Kubbernuss, Fred (b. Abt 1834) & Mary (b. Aug 1836)
                John (b. Apr 1860)
                Fred (b. Sept 1861)

Note: The home village of Fred  & Mary Kubbernuss in Germany and how and when they arrived in the US is still unknown. However, Fred was probably born about 1834 in Mecklenburg Germany. He probably was married to Mary about 1857 in Germany. The family may have lived in the Berlin area of Germany prior to their emigration. Although the greatest concentration of families with the Kubbernuss name has been found in Kuesserow and surrounding villages in Mecklenburg, a great deal of movement of German peasant families occurred this period. Although almost all of these families emigrated from the port of Hamburg; it is possible that Fred departed from Bremen or entered the US through a port other than New York. The evidence suggests that Fred and Mary emigrated from Germany before 1872 and at least two of their children were with them. Data in the Mormon files and other sources indicate the family first settled in Buffalo New York. There is no known record of the family in Buffalo, but this is probably where son Fred Jr. (b. 1872) and daughters Mary (b. 1873), and most likely Sophie (b. Abt 1874?) were born. Our research indicates that there were at least four known Kobernuss families from Mecklenburg who lived in Buffalo at the same time as the Fred Kubbernuss family. One was from Bolz, [6] Mecklenburg Germany (1863) and the other three were brothers and a first cousin from Alt-Gaarz who emigrated in 1869 [14], 1870, [15] and 1873 [21] to Buffalo. There appears to be no mention of the Kubbernuss family in the 1880 New York census. The information from the 1900 Minnesota census indicates the family moved to Becker County Minnesota sometime between 1873 and 1889. Oral tradition and other sources indicate both Fred Jr. and John Kubbernuss moved to Camrose, Alberta Canada about 1900. Fred Jr. apparently returned to the US while John remained in Canada. The 1910 census indicates the family apparently also lived in Oneida County Idaho. One family member believes that Fred Sr. went back to Germany either before or after the family move to Camrose Alberta about 1901.

Note: Departed from Dargun. Same location mentioned in Cobernuss "Wappen" Source: "Germans to America" Vol 27, pg? LDS 0472903. Dargun is very close to Alt Kalen, Damm, Kuesserow, and Levin & Levitzow, also departure locations for other immigrants. Possible, but remote connection: Sophie Kubbernuss from Darbein, Amt Dargun applied for permission to emigrate 16 April 1872. Also noted in Hamburg Passenger List Film A  pg. 338.

Related to two other families that settled in Buffalo between 1863 and 1870. Traveling with Henriette Peters (sister of Sophie) of Luetgendorf and her 8 mos female infant of 8 mos. Wilhelmine. No subsequent record of Henriette or her daughter. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 30, pg 439-444. LDS 0472906.

First cousin to Carl Theodore Johann Friedrich Kobernuss [14] who emigrated on the "Palmerston" in 1869 and brother to  Friederich Kobernuss [15] listed on the "Cimbria" voyage in 1870; both also born in Alt-Gaarz.

Mother [24] Marie Kobernuss (born Fisher) arrived on the "Bohemia" in 1881. She traveled with son-in-law Friederich Santfleben and daughter and their family. For more on this family see: http://kobernus.com/harmonia/index.html

27. Ship "Wieland" Hamburg?-New York 07.07.1875 - 21.07.1875
Capt. Hebich ID : 33862; Class: Third/Steerage

a. Kubbermuss, (Kubbernuss),  Christian (b. Abt. 1817) Farmer & Sophie (b. Abt. 1817) Wife
b. Kubbermuss, (Kubbernuss), Joachim (b. Abt. 1845) Sailor & Louise/Luise (b. Abt. 1848) Wife
                  Wilhelmina (b. Abt 1873) Child
                  Anna (b. Abt 1875) Child

Note: Probably departed from/born in Levin Werder. This is the third of three immigrations of this family to Three Oaks, Barrien County Michigan. See immigrants [8] and [10]. May be related to Johann Kobernus of same village [11].  This is probably CHRISTIAN Gottfried Christoph Kubbernuss (b. Abt 1814 in Lehnenhof) and SOPHIA Elisabeth Magdalena (Helene) Burmeister (b. Abt 1814 in Schorrentin Parish). Christian Probably born Lehnenhof, Dargun parish and married in Schorrentin Parish. Look for Sophia’s birth in Schorrentin. Christian and Sophie's two sons Friederich and Johann had already immigrated to Three Oaks in 1867 and 1868. A daughter, Frederica Johanna Christiana Kubbernuss married Johann Christian Friederich Teich in 1860 in Levin. They and their five children may have stayed in Levin but have not verified this. Need to review passenger records to see if any Teich families immigrated to Michigan.

Traveling with Christian and Sophie were their grown son, Ludwig JOACHIM Friederich Wilhelm 2Kubbernuss, (b. 17.August.1843) [look for birth in Lehnenhof.] and wife Luise Pauline Friederike Koch (b. 2.March.1847 in Malchin). They traveled with two children Wilhelmina Friederike Dorothea (b. 21.September.1872 in Levin), and Anna Dorothea Christiana (b. 12.July.1874 in Levin.). Need to check Michigan marriage records between 1890 and 1900 for the marriages of Wilhelmina and Anna.

30. Ship "Wieland" Hamburg-New York 19.04.1882 - 04.05.1882
Capt. Unknown; ID: 36595; Class: Unknown; Country of Origin: Prussia

Koberuuss (Kobernuss), August (b. 1837) & Wilhelmina (b. 1844)
Wilhelmina (b. 1874) (Passenger record says male but think it's female)
                Anna (b. 1875)
                Bertha (b. 1877)

Note: Family departed from "Hassdorf". Could be Hasseldorf, Lindenhof parish, Demmin, M-V 17111

Chicago 1910 US census reflects a Minna Kobernus living in Chicago area, Illinois living with Grandson Frank Voss age 26, on North Hoya (Hoyne??) Ave. Widow with three Children all living. Immigrated in 1880. Spoke no English, but writes & speaks in German.  The 1912 Chicago directory lists a Minna Kobernus (Widow of August) at 3065 N. Hoya (Hoyne??) in Chicago. Good possibility this is North Hoyne Ave.

No record of death of August Kobernuss but a Minnie Kobermuz (b. Abt 1845), died at age 71 in Evanston, Cook, IL on Feb 8, 1916. ID # 0000000010. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 42, pg 303-309. LDS 0472918. Check here for what we know about the family tree of this family.

Could be related to [27] Frederick Carl Johann Kobernuss (b. 1837) who departed from Ivenack the same year.

Additional clue: Elmer Kobernus, grandson of Carl Kobernus of Oak Park said he had a cousin named Frank Voss

31. Ship "India" Hamburg-New York 21.09.1882 - 09.10.1882
Capt. Unknown; ID: 36926; Class: Unknown; Country of Origin: Hesse

                Wilhelm F. (b.17 Dec 1873) Son

Note: Family departed from Ivenack, Demmin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ZIP 17153. Although the passenger record says their country of origin is “Hesse” there is a high probability this is the family that settled in Chicago. Sons William and Herman were in the Grocery business together on Wentworth street in Chicago until William and parents moved to La Porte Indiana about 1903-4. Herman remained in the Chicago retail Grocery trade where his business was listed in the city directory at least until 1912. William married into the Lange family of La Porte but died in 1909. Parents and William are buried in La Porte. Herman died in Wisconsin in 1972. Source: Filby, Vol 44, pg 258-9, LDS 0472919.

or cousin. Marriage record says father is Friederich]

Note: Departed Matgendorf near Levitzow, Mecklenburg. Source: "Germans to America" Vol 45, pg 1-3. LDS 0472919. This family shows up in the 1900 Detroit Census with two additional children (Anna and Carolina) born after arrival. "Henning (b. 1887)" is probably Henry (b. 1870) who appears in the Detroit Directory until the early 1900's. No subsequent record of Wilhelm and the two daughters. Family lived very close to  Frederick J. Cobernus(s) [17] in the Detroit area. Frederick had same profession - dairyman as Christian and came from Levitzow, very close to Matgendorf. A William Cobernus (1894-1943) shows up in Michigan Social Security data. Grandson of either Christian or Frederick?
