1819 Mecklenburg Census

The Mecklenburg census of 1819 is a well known civil document and is available from the Family History Center libraries and is on 60 rolls of microfilm. The 1819 census is arranged by districts and cities. Three district abbreviations are shown in the indexes:

• D.A. = Domanialamt or Domaenenamt (District of a domain or crownland, the revenue of which goes to the reigning sovereign).
  
• R. A. = Ritteramt (Knight district). Ritter means knight, a term of elevated free status, originally claimed for performance of military service to a sovereign; privileged "noble"rank. A "Rittergut" (estate of a knight) was formerly owned only by those of nobility. Later others who did not belong to families of nobility were permitted to acquire "Rittergueter."
  
• K.A. - Klosteramt (Monastery District). A Kloster is a cloister or monastery. Klostergueter were under the jurisdiction of the Catholic Church.
  
• The fourth district in the census is the Stadt (city).

Lists of towns are at the front of each book. Included are the name of each person, birth date and place, how long lived in the town, single or married, and religion. Military records cover the Domaines and cities.

The following villages have Kobernuss, Cobernus, Kubbernuss names recorded in 1819. As far as we know, these names existed at this time only in Mecklenburg and Pomerania.  It is Likely  that most living persons  with these names are direct descendants of these people counted in the 1819 Mecklenburg census. We've reviewed the census film for most of the villages but need to order some others and take another look at all of them. We reviewed the church records for several of these villages and found many of the people enumerated in the 1819 Census

You need to know to which district your village belonged in order to find it on the census rolls. How do you find this? Consult "Meyers Orts und Verkehrs Lexicon des Deutschen Reisches", a gazetteer of the German Empire as it existed during this time. It is found on microfilm [A-K] #496,640, or [L-Z] #496,641. It is also available on microfiche, #6000001-29.

At your Family History Library, print the listing for the 1819 Mecklenburg-Schwerin census from the Library Catalog CD. The alphabetical listing of the districts and the film numbers is only three pages long.
